==Etymology==
Penzance has the same name with the same etymology as a homonymic village of Léon (Brittany), on the other side of the Channel, , pronounced ''Penzes'' in Breton. It refers to a word meaning in old Breton, essentially the same language as old Cornish, ''wrecking''.〔 J. Ch. Cassard, ''Les Bretons et la mer au Moyen Âge'', PUR, p. 160, n° 66, Rennes, 1998 ISBN 9782753526266.〕
